Amnesty extension necessary – association

KOTA KINABALU: Malaysian Consumer Protection Association (MCPA) Sabah Chapter chairman David Chan thanked the City Hall for holding an amnesty programme yesterday to enable violators of Parking By-Laws to only pay RM10 for every unpaid compound ticket.

He said the amnesty had helped remove a “big thorn” on the shoulders of many violators, especially those with accumulated overdue parking compounds.

David hoped the human gesture shown by City Hall would not be interpreted by motorists not to pay their parking compound tickets on time.

“This is a rare opportunity extended to the violators to ease their financial burden in paying compounds…take this ‘Amnesty Day’ positively and not as an encouragement not to pay overdue compound tickets on time,” he reminded the public.

David said it was the responsibility of every violator of City Hall’s By-Laws to make sure they paid their respective compounds on time failing which they have to face the additional penalties.

“Based on the huge turnout of people yesterday, I feel sorry to note that there are many compound ticket holders who failed to pay their dues to the local government authority on time….I hope the inconveniences experienced by many will now encourage the public to strictly comply with all the rules and regulations of City Hall to avoid unnecessary compound tickets,” he said.

In view of this, David suggested the City Hall seriously consider extending the amnesty programme by a couple of days.

Extension of the programme, he said, would surely be beneficial to both the government and the public in general.
