Woman fined RM25,000 for allowing five illegals in her premises

KOTA KINABALU: A woman was fined a total of  RM25,000 for allowing five illegal immigrants to remain in her premises.

Sessions Court judge Azreena Aziz imposed the fine on Vivian Yong Hsiao Tieng, 28, after the latter admitted to allowing the illegal immigrants to remain at Unimekar Metals Sdn Bhd in Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park here at 1.10pm on June 6, 2017.

The illegal immigrants aged between 29 and 38 were three Filipinos, a Filipina and one Indonesian man.

She was charged under Section 55E of the Immigration Act 2009, which carries a fine of not less than RM5,000 in fines and not more than RM30,000 or a jail term of up to 12 months or to both for each illegal immigrant found at the premises, upon conviction.

Vivian was fined RM5,000, in default, three months in jail for each illegal immigrant harboured.

In mitigation, Vivian, who was not represented, prayed for leniency and told the court that she had just started working for six days.

Prosecuting officer from the Immigration Department Hamisah Puteh requested for a deterrent sentence to be imposed on the accused.
