Man dies after rescued from sinking boat

KUCHING: A man was pronounced dead not long after he arrived at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), following a boat sinking incident at Kampung Bako near here on Friday.

In the incident that occurred around 3.30pm, Shadan Jemi, 56, and Bidin Nerawi, 58, were on board a boat heading towards Bako National Park when it sank after being hit by waves.

Fire and Rescue Department personnel were deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 5pm.

Upon arriving, they saw that both men had been saved by local villagers and brought to Bako Terminal.

It is learnt that a doctor, who happened to be at the scene at the time, performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Shadan before handing him over to the Emergency, Medical Response Services (EMRS) team and later, to the paramedics.

It is said that Shadan remained unconscious throughout the journey to the hospital.

He arrived at SGH 6.45pm but was pronounced dead around 7pm
