KUCHING: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (Customs) has suspended the licences of seven forwarding agents from Sarawak.

They were among 31 forwarding agents nationwide who were suspended for committing violations under the Customs Act 1967, said Customs director-general Datuk Seri Subromaniam Tholasy.

“The errant forwarding agents were found to have committed various offenses including falsifying documents, submitting incorrect declaration, participating in smuggling activities, presenting falsified Customs Official Receipts and so on,” he told a press conference at a leading hotel here.

He said the suspension takes effect immediately today.

“Customs agents need to carry out due diligence on their respective customers and be responsible in recognising and knowing their customers (importer/exporter) who have been appointed as agents dealing with custom-related matters.”

This, he added, included taking full responsibility for customs declaration and being fully aware and updated on information concerning declarations made during import and export transactions.

Subromaniam thus warned the department’s 3,000 forwarding agents in the country to comply with the laws and regulations set by Customs, failing which stern action will be taken against them.
