KAPIT: Neighbourhood watch committees (KRT) here have been called on to be creative and innovative when it comes to organising events for the community.

Department of National Unity and Integration Kapit officer Jendri Mangku said this is to ensure all age groups can participate.

“We are aware that for some KRT, especially those in urban areas, youth participation is lacking. In light of this, I appeal to all KRT in Kapit Division – Song, Kapit, Bukit Mabong and Belaga districts – to plan activities to attract their participation.

“Also, I would like to urge you to organise varied activities – welfare for those in need, children’s education like motivational talks or seminars, safety on river transport as the main mode of transport in Kapit, good health practices, and gotong royong, etc. Our goal is to attract everyone in the neighbourhood to play their part,” she said when opening an event organised by KRT Sungai Pulang at Rumah Itu, Baleh recently.

She said KRTs aim to promote a caring society, instil the spirit of voluntarism, and strengthen ties among neighbours, besides looking after the peace and security of the area.

“You are the grassroots leaders and act as eyes and ears of the government to inform the relevant authorities what happens on the ground, especially helping the police to deter would-be thieves,” added Jendri.
