Yen Ming gearing up for Asian Games

KUCHING: Asia Games-bound taekwondo athlete Tan Yen Ming will take part in the pre-Games invitation trial tournament in Jakarta, Indonesia from Feb 8-12 as part of his exposure and active preparation.

This was disclosed by Persatuan Taekwondo Negeri Sarawak (WTF) technical chairman Tan Check Joon who noted that the Sarawakian will be competing in the Kyorugi category.

“I am delighted and feel proud to have our young athlete being roped into the Malaysian team by national association to take part in the coming trial event as well as the Asian Games proper,” said Tan, who has also been appointed as the national taekwondo team manager for the upcoming Asian Games in August.

According to him, Yen Ming was selected because of his impressive credentials recently which included being the heavyweight champion in Sukma and Thai Invitation Championship in 2016.

Last year, he won the gold medal at the Taipei President Cup International Championship and various national tournaments.

“It has always been our association’s aim and objective to train and develop more and more potential in national and international competition.

“We are proud for Sarawak which again managed to produce Taekwondo (WTF) athlete for Malaysia to shine at international level,” he said.

Tan, who is also in the executive board committee and chairman of the coaching board for Taekwondo Malaysia (WTF), will lead the national team to the February invitation tournament.
