KUCHING: Miri emerged the overall champion of the Majlis Sukan Sekolah (MSS) Sarawak squash championship at the Sarawak Squash Centre in Petra Jaya yesterday, winning four categories out of six in the three-day event.

They topped the Boys U12,  Girls U12, Girls U15 and Girls U18 categories as well as finishing second in the Boys U18 and third in the Boys U15 to amass 332 points.

Sibu were the champion in the Boys U15 category and third in the Boys U18 while Kuching finished first in the  Boys U18 and second in the Boys U15.

In the Boys U12 singles final, Harith Danial Jefri of Miri eased to a 3-0 win over teammate Wong Lee Hong while Yung Shi Yuan edged Adrian Gerard Harith 3-2 for the third placing.

The all-Miri Girls U15 final saw Claudia Yong beating Iris Cheng 3-1 while Chloe Chieng of Miri blanked Zoe Ting of Kuching 3-0 for the title. Nathan Kueh delivered a title for Miri after he beat Clifford Tay of Kuching 3-0 in the Boys U18 final.

Meanwhile, Kuching collected their only gold medal of the competition through Gregory Chan who beat Caleb Lau of Sibu 3-0 in the Boys U15 final.

Sibu went home with one gold medal after Agatha Cheng edged Mandy Wong of Miri 3-2 in the girls final.

The competition organised by MSS Sarawak and hosted by the Kuching District Education Office was aimed at selecting players to represent the state in the MSSM squash championship in Melaka next month.

Kuching District Education Office Head of Academic Management Silvester Roy gave away the prizes and closed the event.
