KUCHING: Community family days are good in fostering good ties not just among family members, but also with the community.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Datuk Anthony Nogeh Gumbek said this when officiating at the opening of Women and Family Development Council’s Mas Gading-level Family Day and Well Being of Women programme held at Redeems Centre near Bau yesterday.

He said the occasion was a bonding time not just for parents and their children but also with children of their friends.

The occasion also helped to spread health awareness information among the participants who could also learn about their health status by going for a free health screening.

“The food we eat today may cause illnesses but due to science, it can be avoided or cured. Don’t be afraid to go for health screenings because if you find out early that you have an illness, it can be cured accordingly.”

He added that a family day like this could also help children to be healthy in mind and spirit after participating in the fun games with one another.

The chairperson of Women and Family Development Council Mas Gading, Theresa Udam, meanwhile said the family day programme was held to commemorate the Family Month while the Well being of Women programme was to answer the prime minister’s declaration of 2018 as the Year of Women Empowerment.

Among activities held during the family day were football match, creative poco-poco competition, children colouring competition, telematch, aerobics session and makeover and catwalk for husband and wife.

The half-day event was attended by about500 people from Mas Gading constituency.

A member of Welfare Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti) and Nogeh’s wife Datin Caroline Jonathan Sabai and Bau District Officer Amelia Siam were also present at the event.

Meanwhile, the first to fourth places of the creative poco-poco competition were won by Kpg Stenggang Biro Heart, Kpg Sedaing, Kpg Sebiris and Kpg Jangkar respectively.
