KUCHING: Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi was announced as the new secretary-general of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) yesterday.

PBB president and Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg made the announcement when closing the 14th PBB Convention in Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

Speaking later at a press conference, he said Nanta, who is Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development and Kapit MP, will replace Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom who has been promoted to be PBB vice president.

Nanta followed in the footsteps of his father Tan Sri Datuk Amar Leonard Linggi Jugah who served as the party’s secretary-general for 26 years.

Linggi resigned as PBB secretary-general in 2002.

Speaking to reporters after the press conference yesterday, Nanta said he was honoured and touched to be chosen by the party as the new secretary-general.

He said the post carries with it a heavy responsibility but expressed confidence that with experience and good comrades in the party, he would be able to do the job.

“I must admit that I do need time to get myself to learn the vital points of this post but with help from fellow party members, I believe I can do the job very well,” he added.

He commented that during the convention, party members showed that they were very cohesive in answering the calls of the party’s leaders.

“The most encouraging thing (for me) is that the party’s current president (Abang Johari) is speaking about new things such as going forward to be relevant globally and also things such as digital economy this time. He talks about a lot more things than the usual things during this convention.”

The 14th PBB Convention was held from Feb 8 to 11.
