SANDAKAN: The rapid development in technology and the Internet has created a space for a new form of threat to the country, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

He said the social media today is often detected to have dangerous seditious elements that touch on sensitive issues such as race, religion as well as challenging the royal institutions.

“A section of these social media users fail to identify between their right to voice out, democratic principles and cyber-crime offence, thus jeopardising public peace,” he said.

Fuzi said that effective use of communication and multimedia technology could facilitate daily tasks such as communicating, trading, obtaining medical services, and acquiring knowledge online. However, the people are likewise exposed to negative cultures and elements.

“We are exposed to fraud and lies. Every user has their rights to protect. Hence, the awareness about their rights is important so that every user understands this issue and is able to react according to guidelines that are set to protect their rights.”

“With the threat that we now face with the development of communication and multimedia technology, the Royal Malaysia Police is now focusing on this crime (online fraud and spreading of seditious message and false news) with ‘control’, ‘restrain’ and ‘prevent and to investigate’,” he said.

Fuzi said this during the ‘Klik Dengan Bijak’ (Click Wisely) programme organised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Unikop (Royal Malaysia Police and Kolej Unikop), launched by Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman at Four Points by Sheraton Hotel here, yesterday.

Klik Dengan Bijak programme aims to educate the community, mainly parents and students, on the ethics of using the internet so that they would be more cautious before sharing information that they acquire online.

Musa commended the programme and said that he believed the programme would be able to educate the community on how to use the internet with the right ethics, in line with the principles of the Rukun Negara.

Also launched during the programme was Unikop4School as a part of Kolej Unikop’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme to assist child education through online learning.

As a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Royal Malaysia Police Co-operative, Kolej Unikop under Unikop4School programme has chosen 400 children of police personnel, aged between seven to 17 years, to receive ID access to an e-learning application, HomeTutor, costing a total of RM136,000.

The Unikop4School programme aims to help the children of police personnel who are still at school to have access to e-learning so that they can have extra academic tuition digitally, anywhere.

Also present during the programme was MCMC Head of Network Safety, New Media Inspection, Compliance and Advocacy Sector, Dr Fadhullah Suhaimi Abdul Malek.
