KUCHING: The tryout session for the State Under-16 boy’s and girl’s teams drew a good response at the Sarawak Hockey Stadium here last Sunday (Feb 11).

Hockey Association of Sarawak (HAS) secretary Kangot Awan was pleased with the strong turnout of over 40 players vying for a place on the boy’s roster.

“It was really good to see all the youngsters turn up to try to impress on the coaches. It was a very encouraging day,” he said.

The session for girls attracted over 20 players who were assessed by coach Catherine Lambor.

HAS coaching and development head Sunil Roy Chakraverty , a former Sarawak player and coach himself, was present for the tryout.

Sarawak chief coach C Sivasubrmaniam and men’s coach S Srisakunathan were also there to conduct the selection.

While the skill level of the players obviously needs improvement, Kangot is optimistic that there is still have time to put together a decent team for the upcoming U16 national tournament which will be held in Bukit Jalil starting on March 17.

“We will have a centralised training from March 4 to 14 here in Kuching before the tournament,” Kangot disclosed.

The boy’s team will be managed by Ali Rahman, SMK Bako’s coach.
