KUCHING: One of the key roles of parents today is still setting good examples for their children towards becoming a ‘functional family’.

In pointing this out, Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof acknowledges that there are many challenges faced by the parents nowadays and in this regard, they must ‘buckle up and get it right’ in order to raise their children to become useful and successful members of society.

He also realises that money is always a challenge, but there are ways to tackle such issue.

“The (rising) cost of living, for example, normally becomes the hurdle – it often gets families into problems. But in order to lead a happy life, we should always spend within our means,” he spoke at a family seminar conducted by Muslim Health Welfare Association (Perkip) of the state Health Department and Petra Jaya Health Clinic, here on Saturday.

According to Fadillah, who is Petra Jaya MP, some parents tend to make the mistake of overspending; thus, creating problems that render them unable to attend to the more important needs of the family.

“This is why, seminars such as the one today, are vital for families to learn about family management; how parents can become functional and be blessed with happiness.”

Fadillah also reminded parents to never neglect their children’s education, encouraging them learn about technology and the digital age.

“The Industrial Revolution 4.0 is the change that everyone needs to embrace, and to ensure that your children are not left behind, let them be a part of this change and adapt to the digital world,” he said.

The seminar exposed participants to a number of working papers on subjects such as the family institution and syariah (Islamic law).
