KUCHING: Eileen Lau, a sister of Richard Lau who is being detained in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) said she was overjoyed when the latter was finally out on bail in the foreign land.

She was grateful to Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman for securing Richard’s release a few days ago. Eileen said her brother was moved to tears when he saw Anifah and his delegation.

“I told him a few weeks ago that Putrajaya would help but he did not expect a personal visit from the Foreign Minister himself. Anifah is a man of his word. Malaysia really stood up for Richard,” she said when contacted yesterday.

Eileen said: “We are overjoyed and relieved that Richard is finally out on bail. We are truly grateful to Datuk Seri Anifah, who kept his promise and personally met with UAE authorities to secure Richard’s release.

“We also want to thank the Malaysian ambassador to UAE, the Consulate General to Dubai and officers from the minister’s office, who all worked very hard to get Richard out by yesterday evening, in time to usher in the Chinese New Year.”

“And we hope he can come home soon,” she stressed. She said she was also grateful for all the public support and role played by both national and local media in highlighting the ordeals and challenges faced by the family.

The Borneo Post was one of the media that highlighted Richard Lau’s predicament.
