KUCHING: The Ministry of Utilities in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA) will be co-hosting the 4th International Sustainable Energy Summit (Ises) 2018 at Pullman Kuching here on April 10 and 11.

Utilities Minister Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said the biennial event, which is jointly organised by his ministry and the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (Seda) Malaysia, will focus on business networking especially on sustainable renewable energy and energy demand management.

“This is the first time the summit is hosted outside of Klang Valley and this year, it is themed ‘Sustainable Energy: The Future is Here’, which is most appropriate given the global priority on climate agenda and the need to achieve energy sustainability and security,” he told a press conference after leading the Ises delegation to pay a courtesy call on Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg at his office in Wisma Bapa Malaysia here yesterday.

Dr Rundi said Sarawak is a state exemplary in renewable energy efforts having more than 70 per cent of hydropower in its electricity mix and also in rural applications.

“As such, it is most appropriate that Sarawak be the host of a sustainable energy summit of international significance,” he said, adding that Abang Johari will be officiating at the Ises and also delivering a keynote address during the opening.

In line with the state government’s strategic vision on digitisation of the electricity system and the global trend in sustainable energy, Ises will be introducing two new topics; namely ‘The Future Role of Blockchain in the Energy Market’ and ‘The Emergence of Energy Storage Systems’.

There will be 76 local and international speakers from various countries such as Germany, United States, China, France, Brazil, Japan, Netherlands, Canada, Brussels, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Around 700 participants, both locally and internationally, are expected to attend the summit and there will be a business matching session available to promote commercial activities.

Ises brings together various stakeholders – from investors, technology providers, financial institutions to related government agencies – for the business matching session.

Also present at the press conference were Assistant Minister of Rural Electricity Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Ministry of Utilities permanent secretary Dato Alice Jawan and Seda Malaysia chief executive officer Catherine Ridu.
