KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has identified six areas under its jurisdiction where there is ‘chronic’ illegal dumping of waste.

MPP deputy chairman Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim said illegal dumping is a recurring problem that raises serious public health and environmental pollution concerns.

“In such cases, waste is repeatedly dumped in the same locations, giving the false impression that the affected areas are permissible waste disposal sites.

“Illegal dumping was found to be an exceptionally ‘chronic’ problem at Jalan Dogan 6, Kuching City Mall, Jalan Ensing Timur, Jalan Kangkok, Jalan Kung Ping Ulu, and Kampung Tengah Sungai of Jalan Segubang/Sejijak,” he said after chairing MPP’s full meeting yesterday.

He complained that the most frequent places for illegal dumping were residential area roadsides, cul-de-sacs, rivers and streams, while the most common types of dumped waste involved bulky waste such as old furniture, boxes, scrap tyres, old appliances, construction debris, and garden waste.

He said Trienekens would continue to work with MPP to minimise the problem of illegal dumping through a combination of enforcement, awareness, and education efforts.

Ahmad also encouraged residents and business owners to use facilities available to manage waste in a proper manner.

“The present attitude can be improved if the public takes on a more serious stance in managing their refuse; simply by caring more for cleanliness and taking all the necessary steps to manage their waste more responsibly.

“This can be done through easy steps and positive initiatives such as looking after the cleanliness of their homes and neighbourhood, caring for and looking after their bins or bin centres, collectively restraining from littering and indiscriminate dumping, or to start recycling – all simple but crucial steps taken for the good of the community and environment,” he said.
