MIRI: Every child born in the state is entitled to education even those without identity documents.

In regards to this, United People’s Party (UPP) Pujut branch chairman Bruce Chai said parents facing problems of sending their kids to school for such reason should not remain silent as it will ultimately affect the future of their children.

“Children must not face such problem as their future depends entirely on education. In this regard, UPP is taking this matter seriously, and we want to help parents dealing with such a situation.

“This issue is close to UPP’s heart so we urge parents to work with us in finding solutions to ensure their children won’t drop out of education,” Bruce told reporters in a press conference after presenting a ‘letter of acceptance on placement of non-citizen student’ to Andy Lo at UPP Pujut office here yesterday (March 3).

Andy who was accompanied by his father Lo Ngien Fatt was unable to enter Form 1 earlier this year after his application to continue schooling last year was not accepted due to his not having a MyKad and birth certificate.

Bruce said Andy’s father is a Malaysian citizen and his mother an Indonesian.

They did not have a marriage certificate which resulted in Andy not having the vital documents.

Last December, Lo reached out to UPP to help Andy continue his schooling, Chai revealed.

“Usually these children do not have documents as one of their parents is a foreigner, and the marriages were not registered.

“So far, we have received eight cases, of which one has passed and another is in progress. We also work with the National Registration Department (NRD) and Minister of Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah to assist students experiencing this predicament.”
