SHS to present talk on endangered arts of Sarawak

KUCHING: Sarawak Heritage Society (SHS) is presenting a public talk entitled ‘The Endangered Arts of Sarawak’ next Friday from 8pm to 9.30pm at the Ranee Hotel, Main Bazaar here.

Award winning designer Edric Ong will give an overview of the heritage and current practices of ancient and traditional arts and craft of Sarawak, focusing on the ones in danger of being lost as the skills and techniques are not being transferred to the new generations.

These include Iban and Kelabit clay-pots; Malay ‘tikar bergerang’ and Orang Ulu bone-carving.

Ong is a leading Malaysian designer of natural dye textiles, fashion and craft who has won multiple awards. An architect by training, he designed the Sarawak Cultural Village and Kuching International airport. Ong is also a noted speaker, leads many societies and authored several books.

Admission to the talk is free for SHS members and RM10 for non-members.
