KUCHING: A three-hour ‘Jualan Sentuhan’ programme organised by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs at Giant Semariang received overwhelming response from the community here yesterday.

Various household goods and food items were offered at lower than market prices to reduce the financial burden of the people in the face of inflation.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is Petra Jaya MP launched the programme which is an initiative by the government to help the people cushion the impact of inflation.

He said Barisan Nasional (BN) elected representatives could work closely with the various government departments and agencies to launch similar programmes to reach out to those in need.

According to him, this was the first of such programmes in the Petra Jaya parliamentary constituency and a similar programme will be held in Matang on March 17.

Among the popular items sold were flour, sugar, chicken, vegetables and fish.

Fadillah said the frozen marine produce was properly packed by the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) and consumers are assured of the freshness of these products.

He added that the programme was limited to three hours to avert the discontentment of other traders.

Also present at the event was Assistant Minister of Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed, who is also Semariang assemblywoman.
