KUCHING: The public will have to seek permission from hawkers if they want to take their photos at the markets here.

Kuching South mayor Datuk James Chan said this at a meeting with representatives from six markets and nine hawker centres under the jurisdiction of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) yesterday.

“We understand it’s an invasion of privacy when the public take photos of hawkers at the market without asking for their permission,” he said.

He informed that MBKS had agreed to the request by the hawkers to put up signboards at the markets to notify the public about this matter.

On a separate matter, Chan advised hawkers to avoid using styrofoam containers.

“It is said that styrofoam contains toxic substances hazardous to health. Thus, hawkers should use other materials,” he said.

Chan also urged hawkers to avoid using plastic bags harmful to the environment as they are non-biodegradable.

“Do not feed stray dogs to avoid attracting them to the market. The public are worried about their safety after the outbreak of rabies,” he added.

Chan assured that MBKS is a friendly council open to discussion and cares about the welfare and interests of hawkers and the people of Kuching.
