KUCHING: SMK Lutong, Miri is the state-level champion for the #MyGeekMovement challenge organised by Shell Malaysia.

The school will represent Sarawak at the national-level #MyGeekMovement challenge in Kuala Lumpur next month.

The winner of the national competition will go on a two-week educational trip to London in July, which includes a tour of the Shell office there.

SMK Lutong students received their prize from Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg during the launch of the Sarawak Career and Training (SCaT) Fair 2018 organised by Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak (Tegas) yesterday.

Among those present were Tegas chairman and Assistant Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datu Len Talif Salleh; Assistant Minister of Education and Technological Research Dr Annuar Rapaee and Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research permanent secretary Datu Sudarsono Osman.

In a media statement, Shell Sarawak general manager Jill Chieng said five schools in the state were selected for the programme.

The other schools were SMK Merbau in Miri, SMK St Joseph (Kuching), SMK Bintulu, and SMK Kidurong (Bintulu).

“Through our STEM-related programmes, we aim to contribute to future pipeline of talents and capabilities crucial for our industries as we actively shape and participate in the energy transition,” she said.

The #MyGeekMovement challenge was launched by Shell Malaysia last August to equip future generations with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills to lead the emerging energy transition.

It involved 225 secondary school students from 15 schools nationwide.
