SIBU: SMK Methodist had the highest number of students scoring straight A+ in last year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) in Sarawak.

They were Angel Lai An Ge (12A+), Cheong Kang Min (11A+), Cindy Ho Mei Jin (11A+), Delphina Tiong Ming Min (11A+), and Jane Lau Bi Yien (10A+).

Lai was the state’s best student, while Cheong, Ho and Tiong were among Sarawak’s top achievers.

SMK Methodist also had the highest number of students who obtained all A’s in the exam, with 73 scoring all A’s.

“I did not really have confidence in English and History, although I scored A+ for these two subjects during the trial exam,” Lai told reporters.

She also took the SPM Chinese paper.

“My mum encouraged me to take it. My mother said that I must take Chinese because I am a Chinese. It turned out to be one of my favourite subjects,” she said, adding she would likely take up accounting or business studies.

Lau attributed her achievement to a balanced schedule.

The Science stream student is considering changing to the Arts stream in Form 6.

“The reason is because I plan to take up law studies, hopefully in University of Malaya. The policy in UM is that I need to be an Arts graduate to read law,” she said.

Cheong hopes to further her studies in the medical field.

“My eldest brother is a medical doctor in Sibu Hospital while the other brother is a medical student in Penang Medical College. I am looking into either healthcare or pharmacy,” she said.

SMK Methodist also improved its school average grade from 3.32 in 2016 to 2.83 for 2017.

The school’s pass rate for last year was 95.4 per cent.
