MIRI: Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) here held Curtin Academic Open Day 2018 yesterday as a prelude to their annual Curtin Malaysia Carnival on Aug 25.

Its pro vice-chancellor, president and chief executive Professor Jim Mienczakowski officiated at the opening ceremony. Also present was Curtin Malaysia deputy pro vice-chancellor Professor Beena Giridharan

“It is important to keep potential students, their parents and the public well informed of developments here at Curtin Malaysia, particularly our courses and intakes throughout the year. It is also timely in view of the recent releases of SPM and STPM results. I’m sure  school leavers are considering their next step,” said Mienczakowski.

He also highlighted the importance of students making informed decisions by studying at Curtin Malaysia which provides global education at their doorstep.

“Curtin Malaysia prides itself in offering quality yet affordable world-class Australian education and internationally recognised degrees from Curtin University which is consistently ranked in the top one per cent of universities worldwide,” he pointed out.

Curtin Malaysia offers cost-effective alternative to studying in Australia as  courses are identical to those at its parent campus in Perth at Malaysian fees. Students have the option to complete their degrees at the main campus or Curtin’s six other campuses in Singapore, Dubai, China, India, Sri Lanka and Mauritus.

During the Academic Open Day students and their parents were able to get fun, hands-on learning experience while gathering information from staff manning booths of all faculties of the university. There were also activities and talks on tertiary education and careers, and guided tours of facilities at the campus.

Several visitors interviewed commended Curtin Malaysia for initiating the Open Day as it benefitted not only school leavers but the general public including young children.

“This is the second year we bring our children here, the first during the Carnival last year. Although our children are below 10 years, it gives them early exposure of life in university,” said Mohd Dzaidin Mohd Subri, an engineer with Petronas who came with his wife Wan Nurul Hawa who is a lecturer at Curtin Malaysia and their three children.

Goh Ser Seng, chairman of SK St Joseph Parent-Teacher Association concurred with Dzaidin, saying: “For us parents with children who have just got their SPM and STPM’s results, it is very useful as both parents and student can get first-hand information before deciding on the course of study and institution.”
