BINTULU: The SMK Kemena Petanque Sports Development Centre, which is managed by five coaches and three teachers, is on the right track to produce more talented young players for the division.

This is the view of Bintulu Insider Sports Recreational Club chairman Ismawi Bujang after 28 young players from the centre were given the opportunity to gain valuable experiences playing alongside seniors in the just concluded Petanque Double Insider Open for the Datuk Pangeran Daud Awang Putera Cup. A total of 96 players from 48 teams from Bintulu, Miri, Mukah and Sibu took part in the tournament which ended on Sunday.

“The involvement of these young petanque players in the competition is a great exposure for them and for us it is a good platform to unearth local talents,” said Ismawi before giving out prizes to the winners.

He also believed that the close cooperation between local petanque clubs and Sarawak Petanque Association and strong support from local communities augurs well for the development of the sport in Sarawak.

Various programmes lined up this year to further promote petanque include the Inter-Secondary and Primary Schools competition and Petanque Double/Triple Mix Borneo Open.

Earlier, Bineo team emerged champion in the competition and received the RM1,000 cash prize and challenge trophy. Second to fourth placings went to KPVJ Makyong Cafe 1, Expandable Miri and Mukah 1 respectively.

The event was organised by Bintulu Insider Sports Recreational Club in collaboration with Vaie Jepak Petanque Club at Jepak Petanque Arena.
