KUCHING: Kampung Sungai Maong will soon be transformed into a modern Malay village within the city.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said this will begin with a proper road to connect the village to the main road as well as Kampung Segedup in Batu Kawah.

He said the Public Works Department (JKR) has been instructed to research how to realign the village’s current road.

“I have always had plans to bring more development to this area and now is the time that happens. Firstly, we must build a proper road to this village and the development plan for this village’s new road will take place from now to 2019,” he said after prayers at the village’s Masjid Darul Istiqlaal on Monday.

He said the project costing around RM10 million would include a new bridge to replace the current Bailey bridge.

Abang Johari also said a housing area would be developed near the village soon.

“I want the villagers to know that all these developments will take time. I nevertheless hope that they will continue to support us,” he added.

Abang Johari also presented a grant to the mosque for its activities.
