KAPIT: Only 15 teams have signed up so far for this year’s Baleh-Kapit Raft Safari.

Kapit Deputy Resident Galong Luang appealed for more entries for the 23rd edition of the annual competition, which will be held on April 6-8.

“We are hoping to see more entries to take part in this year’s raft safari. Entry is still open to invite participants from both local and outside teams to take part in the competition. The organising committee is making April 6 as the deadline for the submission of entry forms,” he said during a committee meeting on Monday.

Galong called on all government agencies to send teams.

He said possible problems deterring entries include the high cost involved, difficulty in getting bamboo rafts, and logistics.

“All this while the route for the rafting competition took between six and eight hours, however this year, the rafting distance is very short and both of the longhouses are accessible by road. With this short journey, we hope to get more participants this year,” added Galong.

This year’s event will begin at Rumah Naga Sulok, Nanga Merating, Sungai Bena, while the second flag-off point is Rumah Bengau Andah), Lepong Sut, Baleh.

The top prize for the men’s open is RM3,000; while the top prize of RM2,000 awaits the champions of the men’s closed, freestyle, women’s closed and paddle boat categories.
