KUCHING: Police busted a local criminal gang with the arrest of six men believed to be involved in a string of break-ins at Taman Malihah here.

Padawan police chief Supt Aidil Bolhassan said the gang – dubbed Geng Sarim – were taken down during three raids on Friday.

“We first raided a house in Sungai Tengah Kolong, Jalan Matang at 11am and arrested a 48-year-old man.

“This then led to the arrest of four other men, aged between 19 and 38, at a house in Taman Malihah at 1pm the same day, followed by the arrest of a 17-year-old at another house 15 minutes later,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He said initial investigation revealed the six suspects were involved in five housebreakings in Taman Malihah, with the main suspect – known only as Sarim – still at-large.

“The suspects were assigned various roles based on rotation; either they were tasked to break into the house or act as a lookout when committing the crime,” he said, adding four of the suspects had multiple criminal and drug records.

During the raids, police recovered five suspected stolen television sets as well as a motorcycle which had been fitted with an incomplete licence plate and had a tampered chassis number.

All six were remanded yesterday to facilitate the investigation, with police currently working to track down the remaining suspect.
