Rotary Club praised for charitable work

KUCHING: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Dato Sri Nancy Shukri lauded Rotary Club of Kuching Central for their many noble and charitable work over the years.

“We are here today to be your partners and be part of your charitable programme for the good of society. I congratulate you (Rotary Club of Kuching Central) and also we are here today to create new friends and to foster better relationship with people from all walks of life like one big family. This event is very much a family programme and it’s like one big family bonding event and yet charitable in nature,” she said.

“Today is the day we exercise, to stay healthy, stay cool and enjoy ourselves in this charity run,” she said before flagging off ‘Rotary Charity Run 2018 — Gift of Sight’ event at CityOne Shopping Mall here yesterday.

Earlier, chairman of the organising committee for the 2018 Rotary Charity Run, Jong Kiam Ngee, thanked the participants for making the run a success.

He said the Gift of Sight project for cataract sufferers had been the signature programme of the Rotary Club Kuching Central for over ten years in collaboration with the Cataract Clinic of 1Malaysia, Ministry of Health (MOH).

“With your support, this year we have over 3,500 runners. Your support has enabled us to raise RM380,000 in cash and kind,” he pointed out.

“This will enable us to brighten the lives of 1,000 cataract sufferers in rural Sarawak,” he added.

He thanked all the sponsors and the organising committee for making the event a success.

The top 30 runners in the 10km male and female categories were awarded prize money amounting to RM8,000 in total.

Rotary International District 3310 2017-2018 governor Datuk Lee Chuen Wan, Rotary Club Kuching Central president Benjamin Lo and District 3310 2017-2018 first lady Datuk Naomi Chong were present.
