KUCHING: Two local men were arrested by soldiers in Lundu after they were found in possession of homemade rifles yesterday.

The suspects, who are believed to be poachers, were nabbed at Simpang Kandaie around 12.20am by personnel from the 13th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment during a routine patrol of the Sarawak-West Kalimantan border at Biawak.

A search of a gunny sack in the men’s possession revealed the homemade weapons along with some live ammunition.

They were subsequently taken to the Lundu police station for further investigation.

Separately, a foreign national was detained by soldiers after he was found in possession of offensive weapons during a roadblock at the border entrance between Serikin-Jagoi Babang on Saturday night.

The suspect was stopped for a routine inspection around 11.40pm and was found with five machetes, which had been kept inside a gunny sack.

He was then brought to the Bau police headquarters for further investigation.
