SIBU: The upcoming parliamentary election (GE14) is very crucial to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg as he needs all the people’s support to give him a bigger mandate.

This means that the state Barisan Nasional (BN) needs to have as many parliamentarians as possible to enable Abang Johari to negotiate with the federal government for devolution of power and the return of rights that have been eroded to the state, said United People’s Party (UPP) president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.

Addressing  unity night at a restaurant here on Saturday, the Minister of International Trade and E-Commerce and Bawang Asan assemblyman said Sibu had missed many opportunities to be developed since it was in the hands of the opposition for the past decade.

“I think it is time we give Barisan Nasional(BN) a chance particularly with the Rancangan Sibu 1 (RS1) – a five-year plan – so that it can help to develop Sibu, especially to elevate it to a city status,” he stated.

On the Sibu and Lanang parliamentary seats, he said most of the voters in the two urban constituencies are Chinese.

Thus, he urged the Chinese community there to think twice about who could bring greater development before casting their votes.

“Therefore, they should really vote very carefully this time around because we have given the opposition so much opportunity.

“For the past 10 years, it was in the hands of the opposition. Now it is only fair that we give Barisan Nasional a chance to do what we can,” he added.

Chairperson of UPP Pelawan, Kapitan Datuk Janet Lau, and UPP’s potential candidate for Sibu Dato Andrew Wong and Lanang Andrew Ting also spoke.
