MIRI: Palliative Care Association of Miri (PCAM) will hold its annual charity run on August 19 at Marina Bay from 6am onwards.

President of PCAM, Dr Loh Yunn Hua, in a press conference yesterday, revealed that the charity run that goes with theme ‘Run for Love’ aims to raise sufficient funds to meet the association’s RM300,000 yearly target.

“Set up in October 2005, PCAM focuses on caring for and supporting the terminally ill and their families in and around Miri.

“As we depend solely on public donations, PCAM requires about RM300,000 per year through public donations, to provide nursing services, loan of medical equipment, training and housing loan,” Dr Loh said.

Medical equipment in the form of oxygen concentrators, ripple mattresses, hospital beds, wheelchairs, suction and nebulizer machines are usually loaned to terminally-ill patients, she added.

“Most of the terminally-ill patients are cancer patients and last year, we recorded 159 new patients compared to 125 new patients in the previous year.

“The increment at this rate is worrying and at the same time, we are feeling the stress in helping to care for the palliative patients.”

Currently, PCAM has three full-time nurses and an administrative staff as well as volunteers from all walks of life.

“Besides home nursing, PCAM also has a day-care centre which operates every Tuesday from 9am to noon at its centre located at No. 406, Jalan Taman Piasau Edar, Piasau Garden.

“We also have activities happening at the day-care centre which include massage, handicraft making, symptom assessment and gatherings for patients and families, and volunteers.

“This year’s charity run will have three categories; namely 10km, 5km and 3km runs. The run is targeting 2,000 participants this year.”

Registration for the run can be done via email to [email protected] or WhatsApp to Vivian Sheila (organising chairwoman) at 012-877 1027 or walk-in registration. Registration fee is RM50 per participant.

Registration fee for children below four years old is not necessary unless they want a t-shirt and finisher medal.
