KUCHING: Parties contesting in the parliamentary election are urged to submit their request for campaign permits early to enable police to plan safety and security measures during political talks.

State police commissioner Datuk Seri Amer Awal said a total of 36 permits have been approved by district police chiefs from April 7 up until yesterday.

“It is advised that the respective parties through their contesting candidates or agents apply for campaigning permits from the district police chief in advance to facilitate the planning of security and safety during the gathering,” he said in a statement issued yesterday.

Touching on Nomination Day yesterday, Amer said the process went smoothly and peacefully without any untoward incident reported.

Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said contesting candidates or agents will be allowed to hold their political talks throughout the GE14 campaign provided that they abide by the law.

“Contesting candidates or agents will be allowed to hold political talks throughout the GE14 campaign period in their respective constituencies as long as they inform the police as stated under Section 24B(3) of the Election Offences Act 1954.

“Non-contesting politicians (who are invited) campaigning for the particular politicians will have to be listed on the permit (based on the date, time and place) under Election Offences Act 1954,” he said through a statement issued yesterday.

Mohamad Fuzi pointed out that individuals who plan to hold an assembly must issue a notice 10 days prior to the gathering under Section 9(1) Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

He also stressed that it was wrong to say that the police created new rules as alleged by some irresponsible parties.
