Sports science crucial in training of athletes

KUCHING: The application of sports science is a necessity in sports nowadays as top nations in sports has already applied and enhanced their training with the latest knowledge in this scientific field.

It is necessary to move beyond the current methods of preparation whereby there is a limitation but beyond that is the usage of sports science technology that can be utilised in continuous coach education which can bring the best out of the talents available in Sarawak.

According to Dr Chin Ngien Siong, Sarawak need to enhance its coaching approaches by investing in sports science to ensure Sarawak benefit from a sports ecosystem in the long run.

Recently, the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) has the expertise of Dr Garry Kuan Pei Ern (USM) who is currently heading the Brain-Network EEG laboratory in the country to assist the Sarawak Education Department athletics team who had improved their medals tally and retained their runner-up position in the 60th MSSM Track and Field Championships at Shah Alam recently.

Garry has applied the Halo Neuroscience, MUSE EEG and complex muscle stimulator technology to stimulate the brain and muscle respectively as part of the psychological skills training to enhance the athletes’ performance.

In addition, the usage of psychophysiology approach through biofeedback technology has also been integrated earlier in which Garry is currently the expert in Malaysia.

Therefore, the SSC has embarked on providing continuous coach education to the coaches regularly in collaboration with the National Coaching Academy of Malaysia in ensuring the coaches continue to be competent in their field of coaching.

An Advanced Coach Education course was organised for those who had attended the Basic Coach Education course recently in Sibu Indoor Stadium from April 27 to 29.

SSC CEO Dr Ong Kong Swee extended his appreciation to all participants, SSC Team Sports Head Mikar Changgan, course coordinator Jubali Suhaili, National Coaching Academy of Malaysia, Dr Chin Ngien Siong and Gordon Nicholaus Jemat Anchang who are two of the ISN appointed instructors for the course.
