Alice Lau not taken in by favourite tag in Lanang

SIBU: Incumbent DAP candidate for Lanang Alice Lau Kiong Yien reminds voters not to be influenced by the ridiculous offer of odds that she will win the election by at least 6,000 to 7,000 majority votes.

“I do not know where the bookies get the odds and I also do not want to know how they come up with such calculations. My advice to the voters is please do not bet on the election results as it will destroy the whole process of democracy,” she said at a press conference here yesterday.

Lau said she had never under-estimated her opponents in the first place and whoever came up with the ridiculous odds must be hoping to create an impression that she is the favorite.

“I have always said that I only have a 50 per cent chance of retaining the seat and I am not a clear cut favorite in this battle. I may have won by over 8,000 votes in the last parliamentary election but that was then and now, the situation is different.”

Lau is facing a three-cornered fight in the election. Besides BN-SUPP Kelvin Kong, the other candidate is Sarawak Peace Party candidate Priscilla Lau.

Lanang constituency, with about 68 per cent Chinese voters and 32 per cent non-Chinese voters, comprises of Dudong and Bukit Assek state seats.

Dudong is under UPP’s Datuk Tiong Thai King while Bukit Assek is under DAP Irene Chang.

Lau said all these offer of odds could be the work of her opponents out to destroy her and at the same time, look for sympathy votes.

“Now is not the time to cast your votes based on sentiments or sympathising a candidate. This election is crucial and it is not a battle between DAP and SUPP but rather, it is between the raykat and UMNO-led BN government.”

Lau said after BN governed the country for 60 years, the people ought to wake up and opt for a change, a change for the better.

Later, in responding to Kong’s statement that he believed he was trailing Lau by about 2,000 votes after a week-long campaign, Lau said that was again Kong’s own assumption.

“How can he read the hearts and minds of the people. Voting is secret and sometimes, when a voter did not vote for you, they will say they vote for you,” she said, adding Kong could be looking for sympathy votes by coming up with that calculation.
