Curtin Malaysia hosts biggest graduation this year

MIRI: Curtin University Malaysia presented scrolls to its 682 students on Saturday – the largest number of graduates ever recorded by the university so far.

The ‘Class of 2017’ assembly comprised 299 undergraduate and postgraduate students from the Faculty of Business, 37 from Faculty of Humanities, 338 from Faculty of Engineering and Science, and eight from other Curtin campuses.

They attended two separate ceremonies on the same day – one for those from the Faculty of Business and Faculty of Humanities in the morning, and another for the Faculty of Engineering and Science in the afternoon – at the same 1,500-capacity Curtin Malaysia Recreation and Event Centre.

The Australian High Commissioner in Malaysia Andrew Goledzinowski, Curtin University (Perth) acting chancellor Sue Smith and its council member Steve Scudamore, vice-chancellor Prof Deborah Terry, and deputy vice-chancellor (international) Prof Seth Kunin were among the dignitaries present.

Representing Curtin Malaysia was its pro-chancellor Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan, Curtin (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd chairman Datu Ose Murang, Curtin Malaysia Management Board chairman Datuk Lee Kim Shin, and pro vice-chancellor, president and chief executive Prof Jim Mienczakowski.

Two-hundred and ninety-three undergraduates from the Faculty of Business received their Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Commerce certificates, while six postgraduate students received their masters and doctorate degrees in business, accounting and management.

Thirteen students from Faculty of Humanities received undergraduate degrees in
Mass Communications, and 24 received their postgraduate qualifications in Project Management.

Meanwhile, 308 students from graduated with Bachelors in Engineering, Science and Technology, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Construction Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, Electronic and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Applied Geology and Computer Systems and Networking.

Graduating alongside them were 30 postgraduates, graduating with masters and doctorate degrees in Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering.

This year’s graduation had one of the highest number of postgraduates – 60 in total, and the highest number of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, received by 20 individuals.

Curtin Malaysia has produced over 5,500 graduates since its establishment in 1999, including 35 PhD holders since 2011.

Coinciding with the graduation was the awards ceremony at Miri Marriott Resort & Spa that evening, where high-achieving students were presented with university and industry-sponsored awards for excellence in academics, extra-curricular activities and community services.

According to Mienczakowski, the graduation and awards ceremonies were also occasions for the university to celebrate many of its latest achievements.
