KUCHING: The win in Saratok has given Krian assemblyman Ali Biju the additional duty of being a parliamentarian.

The Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) man won over Barisan Nasional’s (BN) candidate Subeng Mula with a 989-vote majority yesterday.

It is known that it was Ali’s second attempt in the parliamentary polls.

Subeng is the BN newcomer to replace former MP, Tan Sri William Mawan.

The official result was announced by returning officer (RO) Mohd Ikmal Abdullah around 9.15pm at Krian community hall in Saratok.

Ali secured 11,848 votes against Subeng’s 10,859.

The PKR man also improved his personal result this time, having obtained 9,519 votes versus Mawan’s 11,600 in the 2013 parliamentary election.

In the 2011 state election, Ali beat the then-Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) deputy president Datuk Peter Nyarok in Krian and retained the seat in 2016 when he defeated SPDP’s Kilat Beriak.

Voter turnout in Saratok yesterday was 75.6 per cent, out of total 30,517 registered voters.
