LABUAN: Former member of parliament (MP) for Labuan, Datuk Suhaili Abd Rahman, has confirmed that he will be joining Parti Warisan Sabah to help strengthen the party’s presence on the island.

Suhaili, who was a two-term MP from 1999 to 2008, said, he was moved to join the party and help bring the island back on track economically on the strength of the wishes of the people here.

“I have studied the concept of Warisan’s struggles and that had spurred me to join the party, although I am not in good shape due to my health condition. I had helped to campaign for the Labuan Warisan’s candidate among my supporters on the island during the 14th general election.

“I would be joining the party through Labuan Warisan division and may be working together with the former Labuan MP to take Labuan to greater heights once again like it was during my term as MP. I can see the development on the island has been very slow compared to during my tenure, and this is sad for the people here.

He said since Tun Dr Mahathir was responsible for taking Labuan from Sabah since 1984 and elevated it into a federal territory, Labuan’s development should continue.

Suhaili said the support of the people of Labuan in the just concluded 14th general election clearly indicated that the people here wanted a change.

He also requested the Prime Minister to give similar instruction (as issued to the Attorney General (AG) and other agencies) to stop any files from being moved or destroyed at the Labuan Corporation’s (LC) office, as massive abuses of power and conflicts of interest had taken place over the last 10 years by previous leaders.

“I wish to return the glory of Labuan Corporation like it was before, when I was the chairman for eight years, or at least back on track as before, without any elements of corruption and power abuse, as I have learned and adhered to the advice of Tun Daim Zainuddin, who once looked after Labuan,” he added.
