KUALA LUMPUR: The remains of former Kuala Lumpur Datuk Bandar, Tan Sri Elyas Omar were laid to rest at the Jalan Ampang Muslim Cemetery here at 11.35am yesterday.

More than 300 people comprising family members and close friends were at the burial ground including the Federal Territory Mufti, Datuk Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri.

Earlier, the remains were cleansed and shrouded at the Masjid Darul Ehsan, Taman TAR, Ampang Jaya, for the funeral prayers. Elyas, who was born on Nov 16, 1936 in Penang, died at 7.15 Tuesday night due to various health complications.

Elyas, 82, had held the post of president of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) from 1985 until 1993, and helped the Malaysian badminton squad to lift the Thomas Cup in 1992.He had also held the post of president of the Kuala Lumpur Football Association (KLFA) and led the team to emerge as Malaysia Cup champions from 1987 until 1989.

In addition, Elyas was appointed as the third Datuk Bandar Kuala Lumpur in 1981 and served until 1992 before being appointed Sports Commissioner at the Ministry of Youth and Sports from January 2005 until April 2008. — Bernama
