KUCHING: Sarawakians and Malaysians must give the new Pakatan Harapan federal government time to deliver its promises and continue to work together in the interest of their fellow human being.

Newly-elected Puncak Borneo MP Willie Mongin said everyone must be aware that life is short and therefore, they must not waste time on pettiness, but focus their energy towards the betterment of the state and nation.

“A new Malaysia has just been born, and I hope we, Malaysians – be it the Malays, the Chinese, the Indians, the Dayaks – will continue to strengthen peace, progress, unity and prosperity in our land and make our contribution to the state, the nation and the world as well in whatever capacity.

“Malaysians have just elected their new government, giving the mandate to Pakatan Harapan to rule the country, and I am one of those whom you people in Puncak Borneo have sent to Putrajaya to represent you all.

“In this context, I must appreciate our achievements and extend our appreciation to the Malaysian voters including most of you in Puncak Borneo. I will also appreciate the continued support from you all as we strive to build a better Malaysia for all Malaysians,” he said.

He said this at the Gawai festival with the people at Kampung Bratan community hall, Jalan Puncak Borneo here last night.

Willie noted that being part of the federal government of the day, the interest and welfare of the people in his constituency and Sarawak as a whole will always be one of his top priorities.

He said he had several plans for his constituency, but he would rather keep them to himself for now, as most Malaysians know that the new Malaysian government is still trying to cope with the high national debts.

“But I can assure you, at the local level I will seek for more federal funds in my capacity as an MP for the steady growth and development of my constituency and Sarawak as a whole,” he said.

Willie also expressed his gratitude to the voters in Puncak Borneo for rallying behind him in the last parliamentary elections.

He acknowledged that without the people’s support and votes, he would not be standing before them on the evening.

“I greatly honour and appreciate every vote that I obtained during the last election.

“Although officially I am the ‘Yang Berhormat (YB), but please don’t call me YB, you may just call me “Mr or Brother Willie”.

“To me, what is there in the title? I come from a poor family. What is important is to make the best of what we have achieved for the betterment of all,” he said.
