PUTRAJAYA: The tenure of Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah as Election Commission chairman has been shortened, to July 1.

The EC in a statement here said the shortening of his tenure received the consent of Yang di-Pertuan Agong and was conveyed via a letter from the Comptroller of Istana Negara dated June 7.

The statement said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was also informed of the matter via an official letter dated June 11.

“The EC wishes to record its deepest appreciation to Mohd Hashim for his service as EC chairman,” said the statement.

Mohd Hashim joined the EC on Sept 5, 2014 as deputy chairman and was appointed chairman on Jan 24, 2016.

EC commissioners are protected by tenure, and may only be removed through the same procedure as a judge of the Supreme Court. — Bernama
