KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) yesterday clarified that it was the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) programme, and not the National Security Council (NSC) Act, that would be reviewed by the Pakatan Harapan government.

Mindef, in a statement here yesterday said a confusion occurred in the media reports on the statement made by Mohamad during an interview with the media last Thursday.

“The review stated by the Minister of Defence refers to the PLKN and not the NSC Act as reported,” the statement said, adding that the PLKN programme was currently under review and would be finalised by the Cabinet soon.

Mohamad was reported by several media organisations and and portals as saying that the government would review the NSC Act to ensure that it would not become a political tool.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was reported as saying that the NSC Act 2016 was among the laws being reviewed for possible amendment or repeal.

He said the review was being carried out as some of the laws were used by the previous government to restrict the people’s freedom. — Bernama
