KUCHING: Children should be exposed to sports from a young age, says Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang.

According to him, successful awareness begins at home, where the parents have to nurture and influence them to take up sports towards achieving good healt.

“We need to start talking to our children about all sorts of things, including (the dangers of) drugs, starting from young. This should not be a taboo topic – we need to give them clear and consistent messages about what’s positive and what’s harmful for them.

“Children need rules and limits. You are your children’s most important teacher. Your words and actions help shape their ideas of life,” he spoke at the One Goal ‘Eat Right to Play Right’ Football Carnival on Saturday.

Lo said the first few years in a child’s life are important in building good values, self-esteem and skills needed to lead a positive life.

“We let our children know that they’re important when we listen carefully to their questions. Simple, direct answers often satisfy them.”

On the football carnival, Lo said it was a great way to teach children about ‘eating right to play right’, working as a team, making decisions, and getting organised from young.

Additionally, he also called upon more governmental and non-governmental organisations, as well as volunteers to work together in bringing in more sports and drug awareness programmes to the local community.
