Three students injured after a thermometer broke at school’s lab

SANDAKAN: Three secondary school students were injured after a thermometer broke at the school’s laboratory here, today.

The students were identified as Mohd Zahir, Hamidah Azrul and Siti Salmiah Yakub, all 14 years old Form two students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Elopura here.

They were using the thermometer for a Science experiment, but the thermometer fell from the table and mercury from inside the thermometer spilled. The three victims were injured from exposure of the mercury on their skin.

Fire and Rescue Department of Sandakan received a call on the incident at 3.04pm and seven firemen reached the scene to clean the mercury from the broken thermometer with sulphur powder.

Chief of Sandakan Zone Fire and Rescue Department, Anddre Andrew said that the operation ended at around 3.45pm and the victims were treated at school before sent to the hospital for further treatment.

The victims were reported to be suffering from mild injuries.
