BINTULU: A woman and a two-year-old boy were killed while five others were slightly hurt after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a drain near the Road Transport Department office here yesterday.

District police chief Supt Zulkipli Suhaili when contacted identified the two deceased as Munipah Marzuki, 24, and Mohd Haiman Abdullah.

He said the five survivors comprised the 21-year-old male driver, two women aged 24 and 54, a 12-year-old girl, and the deceased toddler’s twin brother.

“Initial investigation indicated the vehicle went out of control while travelling downhill along Bintulu-Tatau road, before skidding and crashing into a drain on the left side of the road around 5.40pm.

“The deceased woman was thrown out of the vehicle and hit her head against the concrete drain, while the toddler succumbed at the scene due to severe head injuries,” he said.

He said the driver and other passengers were sent to Bintulu Hospital for treatment.

Police have classified the incident under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
