GEORGE TOWN: Seri Delima state assemblywoman Syerleena Abdul Rashid claimed yesterday that she had received a death threat.

A note, ‘Maut Menanti Kamu’ (Death Awaits You) written with a red marker pen on an A4-size white paper, was sent to her service centre in Gelugor here yesterday, she said at a press conference yesterday.

“I found the note stuffed between several envelopes in the mailbox when I retrieved the letters at about 3.30pm yesterday (tuesday). I was surprised when I saw the note and then became afraid,” said Syerleena, 38.

“This is a serious warning. I related the matter to my staff and we lodged a report at the Jelutong Police Station at 7pm yesterday,” said the DAP assemblywoman.

Syerleena said she did not know the motive behind the sending of the warning note but did not discount the possibility that it was related to the slander against her that was circulated on Facebook over the past year.

Syerleena said the slander had been circulating on Facebook since March last year.

“I refuted the slander, but it was circulated again … recycled. It appeared for the first time in March last year and I lodged a police report and called a press conference on the matter. It appeared again on Aug 28 last year. I also lodged a report and called a press conference.

“It emerged again in April this year, before the 14th General Election. Again, I lodged a police report and called a press conference. The issue came up again last week. I received various negative comments. I lodged a police report yesterday (Tuesday),” she said.

Syerleena said she had identified several Facebook accounts that had unloaded the slanderous remarks and asked the police to act against the individuals.

Meanwhile, North East District Police chief ACP Anuar Omar confirmed having received a report on the matter and said the case was being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication. — Bernama
