MIRI: A man and his young son perished in a collision at the junction of Jalan Bahagia, near Kuala Baram bypass here on Wednesday night.

The deceased have been identified as Thomas Balang Apoi, 45, and his eight-year-old son Elfhy Leonald Panai Thomas, from Vista Perdana.

Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said the incident happened around 11pm, involving a sedan car driven by Thomas and a pickup truck driven by a 25-year-old male.

“Initial investigation revealed the pickup truck was heading from Permyjaya to Pujut when it collided with the car, which was in the process of turning into a junction from the opposite direction,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Alexson said Elfhy died at the scene while his father succumbed to his injuries at Miri Hospital not long after the incident.

“The pickup truck driver was also hurt in the accident and was sent to Miri Hospital for treatment,” he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
