PAPAR: The State government is aware and will take appropriate measures to address shortages faced by the Papar District Council, namely its cramped building.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Jaujan Sambakong said the building is still in good condition but cannot accommodate the 176 personnel there.

“There is definitely a need for this because Papar is growing but the counters and enforcement unit are cramped together, creating an uncomfortable situation,” he said when met at a press conference following a working visit to the district council.

Jaujan also said despite the fact that Papar is one of the oldest districts in Sabah, its development is lagging compared to that of other districts.

“Many things need to be done here, including the need for infrastructure, administration and manpower at the district council. With the government’s announcement to make Papar an education hub, better management infrastructure is needed,” he said.

Jaujan, who is also Minister of Local Government and Housing (KKTP), said among things that need upgrading is administration management, especially since Papar is set to accommodate more educational institutions, including technical schools.

He said the government wants to nurture a society not only adept in religious and spiritual matters, but also one that is more productive and knowledgeable in various scenarios.

Meanwhile, he said a workshop to improve local authority (PBT) service would be held after a visit to each PBT in Sabah.

“After devolution of power to the PBT, we will also discuss laws in service to raise staffing grade of PBT statewide,” he added.

Also present at the press conference were Minister of Law and Native Affairs cum Pantai Manis assemblyman Datuk Aidi Moktar, KKTP assistant minister Hiew Vun Zin and KKTP permanent Secretary Datuk Ginun Yangus.
