KUCHING: Society for Cancer Advocacy & Awareness Kuching (SCAN) here recently launched WALK WITH ME – a 5km-walk which will be held at the Amphitheatre at Taman Budaya here on Oct 27 at 6am.
This event is also to celebrate and commemorate SCAN’s first anniversary of its formation on July 24 last year.
According to a press release, the event aimed to increase public awareness on cancer as a real life challenge affecting 1 in 4 Malaysians, and garner support from all walks of life for cancer patients and survivors in their battle against cancer.
SCAN was set up to be the voice of all cancer patients in their effort to have access to better cancer care and be a strategic partner to Sarawak government in related matters, it added.
Various activities and events have been held the last 12 months, including the launching of a series of video clips of survivors’ personal sharing, World Cancer Awareness Day publicity, talks and forums in several organisations and exploration into ways of advocating for better cancer health care in Sarawak.
“The impact of cancer to Malaysians will be significantly reduced when the public gain more knowledge on early detection and education on cancer. This is exactly what we aim to achieve with WALK WITH ME event,” said SCAN president Sew Boon Lui in the press statement.
“We are also honoured to have the support of DBKU Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Wahap Abang Julai who will be officiating at the flag-off on Oct 27.
“WALK WITH ME will be a very meaningful and heartwarming event as it will portray the love, support and camaraderie for both cancer patients, cancer survivors and not forgetting the caregivers,” he added.
Participants will also get to enjoy some lively warm-up exercises and a lucky draw that offers attractive prizes. This event is jointly organised with National Cancer Society Malaysia (NSCM) Sarawak branch and Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS).
“We are expecting 1,000 people or more from both the cancer community (cancer survivors and caregivers, medical team, caregivers and volunteers) and supporters of the cause to join in the WALK event,” he said.
Registration to take part in the WALK WITH ME Event is open to all at RM70 for those signing up in pairs, and RM50 for those registering solo. A complimentary t-shirt as well as a goodies pack will be given to each participant.
