Dance, Malay songs competition Nov 16-17

SIBU: Sarawak Arts Council (MSS) will hold its ‘Dance and Traditional Malay Songs Competition 2018’ at the Civic Centre here on Nov 16 and 17.

MSS chief executive officer Sharkawi Amit told a press conference here yesterday that

the event, which will start at 6pm, is open to Malaysians in Sarawak.

MSS is organising the event in collaboration with the Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Ministry, he said.

“We hope to draw teams from schools as well,” he added.

On the objective, Sharkawi said it is to develop Sarawak arts through organising arts activities such as dance and Malay traditional songs competitions.

“Besides, it is to preserve the cultural heritage, and to unearth talents in performing arts,” he said.

The dance competition consists of two categories, namely Iban traditional dance and creative ethnic dance.

The Malay traditional songs contest also has two categories: male (18 – 60 years old) and female (18 – 60 years old).

Prizes for the dance competition (divisional level) are RM2,000 plus a trophy and certificate for the champion, RM1,500 plus a trophy and certificate for the first runner-up and RM1,000 plus a trophy and certificate for the second runner-up.

For the Malay traditional songs (divisional level), the champion will take home RM700 plus a trophy and certificate while the first runner-up will get RM500 plus a trophy and certificate.

The second runner-up will receive RM300 plus a trophy and certificate.
