KUCHING: For the past 18 years, Azhari Hamdan never fails to decorate his motorcycle with miniature flags of both Sarawak and Malaysia whenever National Day is near.

When Sarawak Day was first celebrated in 2016, he also started to decorate the motorcycle with only Sarawak flags to show his love for Sarawak.

Now 61, Azhari admitted that there were people who applauded him but there were also those who belittled his efforts by questioning if he got any benefit from doing it.

He said he just laughed off those who said what he did was not right, because he strongly believes that every citizen must show their love and patriotism for the country.

“I have been doing this since the year 2000 until now, because I want to encourage everyone to show patriotism and understand the significance of independence,

“We can see now, there are not many young people who want to show their patriotism,” he said when met here yesterday.

He also hoped the relevant government agencies and departments can provide more platforms and activities for the people to show their patriotism.

He said such activities can encourage more people to decorate their vehicles, homes and business premises with national and state flags during Independence Day celebrations.

“We can organise one competition, probably for best decorated motorcycle. Through this, we can bring in the youths to take part in a beneficial activity,” he said.
