KAPIT: With the completion of the 4km earth road, Rumah Roland Banggau at Ulu Sungai Tiasa, Sungai Yong here are now connected to Kapit via Jalan Ulu Sungai Yong.

Travelling distance has been shortened to about an hour. Previously, it took about four hours by small boat along Sungai Tiasa, Sungai Yong and Sungai Kapit.

Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat inspected the road over the weekend, accompanied by his service centre staff and the contractor .

“This earth road was done under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) at a cost of RM500,000. The road is completed now. Today, I drove on the road to test whether it was done properly,” he said.

Jamit further said that the road would provide convenience to the longhouse residents as they would no longer need to negotiate the narrow and shallow Sungai Tiasa to commute to Kapit besides cutting down travelling time.

He also said the longhouse folk would be motivated to cultivate their land along the road with commercial crops.

“Soon I will have discussion with the Kapit Agriculture Department to discuss with them the kind of assistance they could offer to the farmers here,” he said.

Tuai Rumah Roland Banggau was full of praise for Jamit for allocating RTP funds to build the road.

“Life was very difficult because of lack of proper transport. With the road completed we hope life will be easier,” he exclaimed.
